Dion can learn a few more tricks from Graham

A snippet from today's Telegraph Journal (snip, snip, snip) :
What the federal Liberals label green-tax shifting, the Graham Liberals call re-balancing the tax system. The proposed policies in New Brunswick will, if enacted, result in a stronger, more dynamic economy. The province is on the right track - smart tax reform is being considered along with tax relief.
I'm glad Williamson is optimistic. However, I have to live under the current tax system in New Brunswick, and as far as I'm concerned, until these tax reforms are enacted, I'm still being unfairly gouged.

Furthermore, from what I have witnessed in the last twenty months, when it comes to this government, whether it be enacting election promises from the Charter for Change, moving forward with recommendations from the Self-Sufficiency report, following benchmarks from the appointed Population Growth Secretariat, sticking to reforms suggested in the report on Post-Secondary Education, their "will" to make the tough decision, and stick with it, is lacking in spades. So if we are banking on them to make the tough decisions recommended in the Green paper on tax competitiveness, then let me tell you, we will be "shift out of luck" once gain.

Plus, as I've said thousands of times on this blog, you can make all the changes you want to the tax code, but if you don't change the political culture of picking winners and losers via corporate welfare, then it will be all for not.

Unfortunately for NBers, it looks like we have a lot of "talk" going on with regards to tax reform and a lot more "action" when it comes to the status quo, especially corporate welfare and increased spending.

Definitely a lose/lose for New Brunswick taxpayers and business.

Update: I see at least one person values "record over rhetoric" when it comes to the current government's tax policies.

Financial Post:The 5% corporate income tax rate that would “eliminate the tax penalty on growth” by equating it with New Brunswick’s small business rate. As a number of studies have shown, differential small business rates create an enormous disincentive for businesses to grow and develop.

There is no question it would eliminate the penalty on growth for SME's. However, on the flip side, this is just another way of saying that small business owners will be required to report their earnings through personal tax forms as the SME rate is still way above the 1 per cent rate under the Lord government.

This is bad news for those trying to make a go of it in the critical first year of doing business. A year which shows many NB small business start-ups folding.

I for one applaud Shawn and his government. They've begun a hard, but required transformation of our province from the laughing stock of confederation to a place that we can be proud of. Reforming our failing grade schools, planning for our post secondary schools, partnering to improve our energy sectors and finally addressing the "Acadian creep" that's threatening our province. Congrats on a great first session and I'm looking forward to years to come.

This is nothing more than BS from Stephane Dion, another intellectual whom I believe has never worked very hard to earn a pay cheque in his life. He is so out of touch with the reality of the times and the plight of the Canadian taxpayer. This carbon tax is more symptomatic of what is wrong with the modern Liberal Party's mentality. Think of new ways to tax the citizens, so that Liberal politicians can always have the option of appearing like benefactors when they return a small percentage back to the people who paid the least taxes in the first place. This is nothing more than a ruse for the Liberals to have a treasury to get re-elected when they govern.

I have no more money left. Oil and other energy costs are skyrocketing. We are one of the highest taxed nation in the G-8.

Go away Stephane Dion! Go away David Suzuki! Stay away from my last pennies.

Anyway, as I see it, this is nothing more than another Liberal sScam. Nobody knows how to run a scam better than the Modern Liberals. Remember adscam everyone?
The Liberals are nothing more than NDP in drag.

Read our lips Stephane, "NO MORE BLOODY TAXES!"

On a side note, I was glad to see Rodney MacDonald reject the possibility of a carbon tax, even if it wasn't outright.

Is that all they have to offer? Another tax dressed up with Globle warming blabblespeak?

Another tax? I mean really don't Liberals know how to do anything else? (oh... I forgot. sling mud and hope it sticks.)

...finally addressing the "Acadian creep" that's threatening our province.

I hope Shawn Graham is proud of this accomplishment. For a man who considers himself Louis Robichaud Redux, he certainly has gained much support from the CoR demographic.

Bill your have it right. It is hard to listen to Dion because he said a carbon tax was something that he would never support.
I am a former NB'er and I think that the country should look to see how the liberals keep raising taxes in Ontario and it is destroying the economy. I think that the country especially Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces need to lower tax and reduce Government and become more competitive.

Stephan Dion really doesn't know or cannot understand how tax changes and increases can affect those of us that are working hard to barely stay ahead of the bills.
He is arrogant due to the fact that he pretends to understand how hard most of us work and want lower taxes bc they are hurting us.
