Tax Bloc

With their support dwindling to around 28 per cent in Quebec (down 20 points since the sponsorship scandal), the Bloc Québécois have now decided to put sovereignty and separation talk on the back burner in favour of a new tax idea:
Ottawa should stop collecting taxes in Quebec and let the provincial government do the job on its behalf, the Bloc Québécois is arguing. [...]

Bloc House Leader Pierre Paquette said his party will table a bill on the matter in the fall, arguing a single tax filing would help Quebeckers and the Quebec government save about $600-million a year.
They're content on having the feds completely out of the picture when it comes to filing taxes in Quebec, but when the [full] MP's pension cheque comes in, there aren't too many complaints. I guess they too feel entitled to their entitlements (when it comes to our tax dollars).

In other words, they are good receivers just not good senders.

Maybe Ottawa should stop collecting taxes in Quebec but we should also stop the 8-9 billion dollars out of 13 billion from the transfer pot to Quebec.

Quebec can complain all they want but it cannot be taken seriously until they ween themselves off the federal transfers and the goodies they get from the rest of properous Canada. When they take up over 60% of the Federal transfer program it is easy to see that Quebec cannot stand on its own to feet. They need the rest of Canada more than they think. Federalists want a free Quebec and in turn their free ride off of the rest of Canada will end. I don't really think that the bloc and parti Quebecois wants out of Canada but by constantly threatening they get preferential treatment.

Thanks for the comments.

As a staunch federalist (and proud Canadian), I believe that there should be a clear distinction made between Quebec and separatist factions and parties. We should not be painting all Quebecers with the same brush.

And as the polls seem to suggest lately, there are alot of people in la belle province who think federalism is working well for them, not to mention, they view separation (for now) as a useless pursuit.

We Albertans think it's just fine if Quebec were to separate. Maybe they'll see what it's like to have to go it alone, and then perhaps come back into Confederation with a newfound respect for what it is to be an "equal" partner, rather than taking far more of their share of the Canadian pie than any other province and, yet, still complain that they're hard done by.

I also question whether Canada would lose credibility with the rest of the world, as many in Ottawa have suggested for years. Plus, the maratimes would finally be able to form a stronger coalition with the US. Something that your region did when the NB. NS and PEI were a properous area in the 1800's before confederation ruined it for you guys.

As a product of the Anglophone mass exodus that took place in the 1970's, it wouldn't be wise for the citizens of Quebec to futher isolate theselves. The economy and population of the province is at one of the lowest levels ever, why would the province want to continue this trend by listening to a bunch of weakened seaparatist with no mandate? That's what got us here in the first place.

If anything in order to help the province they should be welcoming anyone and everyone with open arms. The french language will never go away, there are laws in place to protect that from ever happening, what will happen is your population will dwindle as other places in Canada become more desirable then "la belle province".

It's time for these jokers to put up or shut up. i prefer the latter.

You're not going to get much sympathy from me when it comes to separatist. I'm a Nova Scotian after all as we're the only province who seriously considered separation anyway.

I am also from Alberta but spent most of my life in NB. I think that Quebec feeds and takes advantage of threats of leaving Canada. I would be glad to see them go bc they are the only province that has not contributed equally to the country. Now as I hear that Ontario may become a have not. I am happy to send transfers to that Province bc they always have to support the rest of Canada but Quebec does nothing and they have isolated themselves and so no businesses want to go to a volatile place. Quebec on its own would be a disaster and i would only find it amusing to see them fail due to their own ignorance. If we stop supporting them I think that the rest of Canada would become more prosperous. The acadians seem to have found a decent balance in so far as they have preserved their culture within NB and Canada alike.

NBT- many Quebecers feel that Federalism is working. Well yes it is the rest of Canada is supporting them with 8-9 billion free dollars per year. They feel if they keep the issue alive they can use it as leverage for more federal hand outs that the rest of Canada can pay for.

There is no question that corporate welfare in Ontario (auto industry) and Quebec (aerospace industry) has left the rest of the country feeling a bit left out.

We all remember how the CF-18 contracts (which were awarded to Canadair in Montreal instead of Winnipeg) outraged adherents of all parties in the West and sparked the Reform party movement.
