NB property taxpayers "Betting on Betts"

New Brunswick taxpayer is commending Moncton area MLA John Betts for his efforts in championing the issue of property value assessment. His bill [Bill 17] --- an Act to Amend the Assessment Act --- will be introduced into second reading stage on Thursday. With property tax rates currently gouging NBers at astronomical levels, there has never been a better time for such a bill to go through in the legislature then this one. If passed, this bill would offer some temporary relief for taxpayers via a property assessment cap. Moreover, it would take some of the financial stress off property owners until the government can come up with an alternative municipal tax assessment arrangement like they have in other jurisdictions such as Britain, California, Florida and Israel. As Tory MLA Betts explains, this bill:
"would cap the property assessments at 3%. This would save New Brunswickers between $133 -$250 and upwards, in areas which have seen their property assessments go up between 9.2 - 12%."
This is one private members bill that yours truly hopes doesn't die a quick death. Let's just say that I, and thousands of taxpayers around the province, will be watching its progression very closely.

Now, what would have been right on would have been if he and the rest of the Tories had done this when the warning bells were going off and they actually had the power to do something.

This is still a good move and one which should be adopted regardless of where it comes from but it's easy to propose popular things when you're not responsible for carrying it through. I watched the PC's drop the ball so many times when they were in power, I'm just plain skeptical. Maybe Betts' motives are noble but I'm always suspicious. Still at least the PC's are proposing some ideas. About time.

Good point, spinks. I'm no expert when it comes to the internal workings of the PC party, but as I see them now, they're an organization in transition.

So if people like John Betts and others decide to step up to the plate and lead the party into the 21st century, I say all the power to them.

Furthermore, he has gained valuable experience in previous governments so I'm sure he knows what works and what doesn't work by now.

And as much as this party has been in neutral for a year and a half now (which I did say on another blog would hurt them), it doesn't mean that there isn't some talent contained within that wasn't tapped into properly during their previous run of 1999-2006. As I see it, Mr. Betts has just got started.

He should definitely organize a campaign search committee.
